      Quick instructions
If your browser is not JavaScript capable you can display the applet clicking on the link: THE APPLET
Select the size of the Single Digit Addition Applet clicking on the button of your choice. As soon as you do not need any instructions, this page can be closed or minimized. It is always possible to open it again from the applet window.
Suppose that you want to add 7 and 5. Click on the button with 7 on it and on the upper red triangle on the left side of the applet. This will create seven green squares in the upper row. Do the same with the button 5 on it, but select the other red triangle. Another row containing five squares will appear. These squares will be blue. Now you have the seven green squares in the upper row and the five blue squares in the lower row. Simultaneously, in the text field below 7 + 5 = appears. Move the cursor to the last square in the lower row, press the mouse button and keeping it depressed drag this square to the upper row placing it right behind the last square there. Release the mouse button. Now there are eight squares in the upper row and only four in the lower row. In the text field you will see 7 + 5 = 8 + 4 =. This replaces addition of the seven green squares and five blue squares with addition of the eight squares in the upper row (seven green and one blue) and the four blue squares in the lower row. Move two more blue squares from the lower row to the upper row filling all ten places there. Your original addition 7 + 5 is then replaced by the addition of 10 + 2 that leads to the final result of 12. This procedure visualizes procedure of replacing the addition of 7 and 5 by the easy addition of 10 and 2.
This applet works very similar way to addition with the help of fingers, except that it is much better organized. It has up to twenty easy to manipulate "fingers" (squares) and with the help of colors it retains the visible information about the original problem.
When a problem is finished and you want start another one, clicking on the "NEW CASE" button will enable the numbered buttons and clear the squares. Clicking at any time on a black framed square on the right side of the applet changes the colors of the squares that originally belonged to that row.
If in the process of the square dragging the annoying blinking occurs, please press the toggle "TRANSFER" button. It will change to "ENERGIZE". Now if you start to drag the square it will disappear and appear again after the mouse is released over the proper destination. This is, of course, the Star Trek mode of our applet. When the dragged square is invisible there is no need for the frequent refreshing for the central part of the applet and the blinking will nearly disappear. Pressing the toggle "ENERGIZE" will change it back to "TRANSFER".
