FERNANDO QUIJANO ECON201 SPRING95-2
Fernando is very knowledgeable and intelligent, which is hardly a fault. The problem lies in the difficulty of the subject
itself and the gap between the instructors knowledge and his expectations for his students, the subject is not easily grasped
by the majority. Personally, I feel I would have done better if there had been a prerequisite which covered very basic
concepts and explanation of terminology along with expanded knowledge of spreadsheets.
Fernando is a pretty good teacher I thought his material for class was good, his tests are hard to understand which makes
this class hard otherwise this class is ok.
I believe he is so knowledgeable in this class. I just think numbers should be put into the information from the beginning. I
also think principles should be a requirement.
It would be nice to have another teacher teaching economics so we can choose which teacher we want to teach us. Some
people just get along with Fernando.
Professor Quijano has extensive knowledge on the subject of economics and even though it was hard to grasp I did learn a
lot and have been able to apply the concepts learned elsewhere. His manner towards the students was always respectful.
There is only one aspect of the class that I would change and I would have the students compute the computer assignment
by hand first so they have a better knowledge of where those numbers are coming from. He is a very effective professor
and tries to lay the material out as simple as possibly.
I plan on taking macroeconomics from the same teacher. I feel that he is very knowledgeable about economics and shared it
effectively with us. I think students do need to show up for class to truly understand the subject. Quijano is always willing
to help students and encourages them to ask. I feel that this is a class that required more attention then some other classes as
it needs a lot of thinking to understand it.
I feel he could have used a better choice wording on his tests. He totally confused everyone . I think he should show a little
more respect for our class no matter what site it is.
I have no problems with Dr. Fernando other then he speaks far too fast and covers too much material in the time we have.
He also puts the class down by saying ("If you don't know this, then you will not pass this course"). I feel that this is
uncalled for and should be avoided. The other thing is his grading policy. He told us before the drop date that if you stay in
class, he will give us a passing grade. If you attend class regularly. After the drop date, we found out that there were still
people that would fail regardless. This is also not fair. I have nothing to complain about regarding his intelligence towards
economics. He's knowledge is unbelievable, he needs to talk more with his students and explain the topics with more
understanding terms for his class. Therefore he should not be excluded from the campus, he just needs to slow things down.
Dr. Fernando does have a thorough knowledge of economics and I feel he is capable of being a much better teacher. He is also a fair man. However, there are some attitudes that must change. First, he has put us down, belittled the us and frankly does not respect us. I don't come to class to be put down. He needs to respect us.
Secondly, As a teacher he is blind to the fact or idea that it is his teaching method makes the class hard. Students do poorly because I can't understand him. I think he feels that he is infallible as a teacher and that students then must be at fault.
He also teaches this class like a 400 level class. Anyone should be able to easily pass this general course; but he is literally
in a race with the previous semester to cover material. He is lofty in his presentation. We spend 10 minutes on a graph and
move on, how can we thoroughly know this material? He is capable of teaching this class slower, with more applications
and explanation.
Quijano is a good teacher. Economics is a tough course to teach but I feel he did an excellent job. If a students needed help
on something, he was there to help and he made sure you understood before you left. I believe his grading techniques are
extremely fair. The grading scale is adequate to the difficulty of this class. I believe Quijano is an excellent teacher and
students who are getting a poor grade in this class probably deserved their grade because if a person reads the book(like he
says we should) and comes to class they should do pretty good. Last semester I took Micro-Economics and I never read and
very rarely came to class. I had a D and dropped the class. This semester I came to class practically everyday and read my
assignment. This semester I have and an A and high B.
He has a very strong knowledge of economics and is very high in his course of teaching. For a level 201 Micro-class he teaches 300-400 level.
Better idea to slow down or step down to an introduction class (Macro-Economics) from him because it would be similar to
the Micro explanations. Teaching the course more effectively would be this explanation. Also the spreadsheet Quarto
assignments were very confusing when experience of this is very little. I thought Quijano knew what he was talking about,
but his teaching methods and his attitudes toward his students need to be improved. He treats those that did not understand
economics like losers and those who did understand were perfect to him. As a teacher he needs to help those that don't
understand so that we do at the end of the semester. He needs to treat all his students with respect and he also needs to
know that not everyone is an economic major like himself and needs to make class a little easier being this is a general and
only a 200 class. I think a new economic professor should be found because he isn't good for the students or Dickinson
State University.
I heard I should take a Micro class from Quijano instead of from a different instructor, and if so I did. He knows his info very well and can usually get it across to the students well also. His onlydownfall is he gets absorbed into the material and teaches on a higher level than a 200 course should be taught-he does this out of his enthusiasm for the course.
He has always been willing to talk to any students, to help them and to listen. He also has a sense of humor and cares about
us, the students, which is a major downfall for some other instructors who don't. The course has been tough however it is
tougher for those who skip class and who have a bad attitude and they get a lower grade and then they complain but it's
their own fault!
This was a very difficult. The material is hard to understand, but after Mr. Quijano goes over it in class it is easier to
understand and grasp the concepts. Although this was a difficult class I think Mr. Quijano did a good job of teaching the
class and explaining the concepts. Mr. Quijano is a hard teacher, but only because he expects you to learn the material.
This is a 200 level course The instructor is teaching at a much higher level which makes this course harder to understand.
The University needs to look into alternative instructors since there is only one left after spring 1995 is over. The
requirements set forth by the instructor are too high for the level of the course. Review is needed!
I believe that this class was taught well by Fernando. It was my favorite business class this semester. I hope to take Econ
202 from him as well!
I would have liked it better if he would of helped us outside of class. I would of done a lot better with just a little more help.
I am glad I took Economics from Fernando Quijano. I know that I have learned everything I need to know about the subject
from the fact that Fernando's course. He is probably the most effective teacher I've ever had.
This is a difficult, time consuming course. We covered a lot of material. Mr. Quijano was always willing to work with
students to explain anything extra that was necessary. Possibly more application and homework assignments would foster a
stronger understanding of the concepts. I believe the students need to make a strong effort to do well in this class.
If knowledge of Quattro Pro is needed for class projects then it should be a prerequisite for this course.
Fernando knows the material and does a pretty good job explaining it, but could use some examples to relate the subject to society. I also feel that he teaches the introductory course at a graduate level, making it very difficult for many students. It would help to have a few more assignments to practice the concepts of the lectures. It isn't how much material you cover, it's how well you cover the material.
