FERNANDO QUIJANO ECON420 SPRING92
This class was good for the following reasons:
1. Fernando really made the information seem easy to understand, even concepts I had never dealt with before.
2. He was very willing to help us whenever asked, and made adjustments when we were having trouble.
3. Put very simply, I learned a lot!
The class wasn't very good because:
1. Test time was very stressful since there was so much new information to remember, that is,
new to me.
The course was very informative, but paced rather fast. On many days you would lecture so fast that to keep up, I had to constantly write and had no idea what was going on. I think it would have been better if you slowed down or gave us handouts to follow along with.
I also think the final is a little bit much. To you this material is easy, to us it's first time stuff. Over the weekend, we're supposed to learn 10 topics and lecture on them, while studying out other finals. Major Burnout!
I enjoyed getting up in front of the class and lecturing a chapter. It was good experience.
This class was good because it gave all of us a better grasp on economic ideas. The class prepared us for a future in teaching the subject.
Although the class did all of these things very well, it was not without it's bad points. I think that
it may have been a little bit too advanced for what we need it for. In High School teachers
basically teach the basics, and don't get too in depth. I was very impressed with Fernando as a
teacher. He was very, very nice and helpful in our pursuits and was generally concerned with our progress.
I thought the instruction was good for their class, but I think we need to be more concerned with
how we as future teachers can teach economics. The class to me seemed to be more for
economics majors, not future social science teachers. The teacher was very concerned with our
progress as students, but needs to make the course more adaptable to how we can teach the
subject of Economics.
Overall, I am impressed with the instructions to the national/course and the students but the level of difficulty of the course is above non-economics majors. I feel prerequisite must be placed in front of this course or material should be geared more towards the educator.
The instructor did everything possible to make the course suit the students, yet, the material
remained difficult. Also, there is a problem with explaining material and assignments clearly.
The material and assignments were confusing. I enjoyed the instructor but the course lacks
pertinence to educators.
This class has been hard and challenging, but enjoyable. This is my 3rd economics course, but it's
the first time I even remotely understood the material. The smaller class size was wonderful, and
I believe that the smaller teacher-students ratio aided my learning. Fernando was a good
instructor-concerned and friendly. I appreciate the extra work he did, and especially the
one-to-one involvement. He has been a good resource, and I feel I could ask for assistance
anytime in the future, and he would be willing to help.
I feel this class was helpful to me although I still don't feel as confident in economics as I do the
other social studies areas. I believe that social science majors should have at least two courses in
economics before econ 420. Some contact with secondary teachers of econ would also be helpful.
They could guest lecture or we could do some fieldwork. The economics side of the social
science curriculum needs to be developed more.
Fernando is a very dedicated educator and is concerned with the progress with his students. I am very impressed with his character and his person ability with students. Therefore, this evaluation does not reflect Fernando as an individual or his teaching abilities.
Truthfully, this class was an utter waste of my time. We as future educators do not have the foundation to survive in this class, especially since Econ 105 was our only prerequisite. The course also has nothing to do with the educational aspect. All it is, to me, was an upper level economics course.
A suggestion for the future would be to have a high school economics teacher come in and teach the class. It would be more relevant and the teacher could give us more insight into how economics related to high school students.
Remember, the problem is not with Fernando, it is with the course.
