Twain's boyhood home has been restored to its original appearance and is now a museum.

The saddest item in the museum is this "death mask" of Twain's infant son, Langdon.  Twain blamed himself for his son's death in 1872 because he had forgotten to pull the covers over him during a chilly carriage ride.


 
 
 

Scholars believe that Twain is the first major author to submit a typed manuscript.

The cap and gown of Dr. Clemens.  Oxford awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1907.

Across town is Mount Olivet cemetery where Twain's father, mother, older sister, and younger brother are buried.  (Twain, his wife, and children are buried in Elmira, New York.)  Mount Olivet also has the graves of Laura Hawkins and Joe Douglass.  Although Laura was proud to advertise herself as the model for Becky Thatcher, Douglass bitterly denied being the model for drunken Injun Joe.
